Alongside Lake Garda, Lago Maggiore is one of the best-known and most beautiful lakes in northern Italy. Lovely for a refreshing dip on a hot summer's day, but also a wonderful area to explore charming little villages. Isola Bella Another (touristy) must is a visit to the gorgeous island Isola Bella, right in the middle of the lake. This 'beautiful island' is entirely devoted to the Giardino dell'Amore ('garden of love') with buildings and statues from the 17th century and a unique view over the lake. Combine Isola Bella with Isola dei Pescatori — a far quieter fishing village a stone's throw away, perfect for a fish lunch overlooking the water.
