Spring (April – June): the hills turn green The vines bud out, fruit trees blossom and wild asparagus and herbs appear in every roadside. Daytime temperatures are pleasant (15–25°C), still cool in the evening. Ideal for walking, cycling and the first outdoor terraces. May might just be the prettiest month: everything is in flower, restaurants are open and the crowds are still far away. Summer (July – August): warm, slow, festival vibes Warm to hot (averaging 28–32°C, sometimes nearing 35°C). Early starts for walks, swimming or siesta in the afternoon, a village sagra in the evening. August is Italy's holiday month — busy and lively in the villages, with some shops closed. Summer months are perfect for families who love spending time by the pool. Autumn (September – November): high season for foodies For many the most beautiful season of all. The vendemmia in September, followed by the truffle market and first mists in October and the mushroom and chestnut festivals in November. The light is gold, the hills turn ochre and red, and the best the region has to offer ends up on the plate. Book well in advance. Winter (December – March): quiet and intimate The calmest season. On clear days you can see the snow-capped Alps on the horizon — a spectacular sight. Ideal for those wanting to escape the crowds: long walks through bare vineyards, long dinners by the fire, a glass of Barolo or Barbaresco without anyone disturbing you. Note that some restaurants and attractions keep winter hours. Undecided? May and October are our favourites: mild weather, beautiful colours, wonderful food and no mass tourism. Do book well ahead though — these are our busiest months too.
